How to Design a Custom Rugby Kit Your Club Will Love

A step-by-step guide for grassroots and academy rugby clubs designing a fully sublimated match kit — from colours and crests to sponsor placement and fabric weight.

Start with your club identity

The best rugby kits aren't just colour-matched — they tell the story of your club. Before you brief a designer, gather:

  • Your club crest (vector if possible)
  • Your primary and secondary colours (hex codes are ideal)
  • Existing sponsor logos with brand guidelines
  • Reference photos of past kits — what worked, what didn't

Pick a silhouette: hoops, quarters or panels

Classic hoops still dominate grassroots rugby for a reason — they read clearly from the stands and look strong on every body type. Quartered designs feel more traditional, while modern panel constructions let you blend gradients and textures.

Get the fabric weight right

Match shirts should be 220–260gsm with reinforced collar and shoulder seams. Training tops can drop to 180gsm for breathability. Always ask for sublimated print, not vinyl — vinyl cracks within a season of contact play.

Sponsor placement that actually gets seen

  • Front centre: primary sponsor (£££ tier)
  • Sleeve and back-neck: secondary sponsors
  • Shorts hip and back: tertiary sponsors

We redraw sponsor artwork for free as part of every Hackin order.

Lock the design before production

Get a full mockup — front, back, shorts and socks — and circulate to coaches and committee BEFORE approving. Once production starts, changes get expensive.
